Kula carpet, also spelled as Koula or Kulah, is a town located in the east of İzmir which is in western Turkey. Kula rugs were first produced in the seventeenth century and throughout the 19th century and into the 20th they have been collectors’ favourites. Kula carpets, similar to Milas carpets, usually look a lot like prayer mats. The patterns used in Kula carpets are similar to those of a prayer mat, as a pattern of an empty altar or an altar covered in flowers or vine can be seen in both. The colours used are also similar, yellow and blue are dominant in both. Despite all the similarities, they have a lot of differences as well, both in size, pattern and colour. Some patterns used in Kula carpets include candles, trees and animal figures such as dragon.
